Do you know what gemstone is associated with your month of birth? Do you know that each of these gemstones is also assigned a symbolic meaning? While the concept of birthstones is largely founded on myths and legends, it’s undoubtedly romantic.
Therefore, it’s not surprising that people looking for unique presents for their loved ones often think of birthstone jewelry. Birthstones give a personalized touch to the jewelry, making the present itself more valuable.
Let’s take a closer look at what this is all about.
The Origin of Birthstones
We can trace the origins of the birthstone concept back to the biblical times. The Book of Exodus mentions that the priestly breastplate contained 12 jewels, each used to determine God’s will. The breastplates were worn by the High Priests of the Israelites, with Aron being the first High Priest, from whom all Jewish priestly families trace their paternal line.
Variations of the Concept
Back in the 8th and 9th century, Christians started wearing a different stone for each of the twelve months, as each stone became associated with one of the twelve apostles. Additionally, each stone was assigned a virtue pertaining to the apostle it was associated with.
It was centuries later that people started wearing just one birthstone depending on their month of birth. It was then that the idea of birthstones became a subject of interest for jewelry makers.
In America, the first official attempt to make a standardized list of birthstones was made by Jewelers of America (then called the National Association of Jewelers) in 1912. After the initial standardization, the list was updated once again in 1952, and finalized in 2016, when the American Gem Trade Association and Jewelers of America collaboratively added spinel as an additional birthstone for August.
Take a look at the list of birthstones for each of the twelve months, as well as the meanings they are associated with in modern times:
|June||Pearl, Moonstone, Alexandrite||Health/Longevity|
|August||Peridot, Spinel||Marital happiness|
|December||Turquoise, Zircon, Tanzanite||Prosperity|
Birthstones and Personality
Since each birthstone has its symbolic meaning, the symbolism can extend to describing the uniqueness of people born in different months.
January (Garnet) – People born in January are protective of their loved ones, especially their family, and are the person to turn to in times of need.
February (Amethyst) – February babies are the go-to people for giving advice. They are honest and impartial, but also considerate.
March (Aquamarine) – People born in March are courageous adventurous spirits. They are confident in their ability to achieve whatever they set out to do.
April (Diamond) – April babies are romantic dreamers. They believe in love with all their heart.
May (Emerald) – May-born people are high-fliers. They boldly pursue their ambitions, whether it’s education, work or relationships.
June (Pearl) – June babies are calm and composed. They also have acute caregiving instincts.
July (Ruby) – People born in July are hard-working and extremely appreciative of what they have.
August (Peridot) – August babies are great to be around when you’re feeling down. They have the power to alleviate emotional pain and are excellent companions.
September (Sapphire) – The most common traits of September babies are wisdom and dignity. They are rational individuals who avoid excessive displays of emotion.
October (Opal) – Those born in October are seen as hopeful and optimistic. They appear to be happy most of the time, even when it’s not necessarily true.
November (Topaz/Citrine) – November babies are associated with having great mental strength and self-discipline. They are loyal friends.
