The crown of founder’s efforts

The Rolex Day-Date was released in 1956, crowning Rolex’ watchmaking artistry. With an Oyster Perpetual mechanism, the Rolex Day-Date was at the culmination of vision that started in 1926. It was in 1926 that Rolex released their Oyster model whose mechanism was dust and humidity-proof. Five years later, Rolex introduced the Perpetual movement, a self-winding mechanism that later became industry standard. The last masterpiece of Hans Wilsdorf, Rolex founder, the Day-Date is by many considered to be the pinnacle of his work. In Wilsdorf’s opinion, day and date were the two most useful functions in a watch. In his pursuit of excellence, he finally designed the waterproof, self-winding wristwatch with a jump calendar system. It’s also interesting to know that the criteria for the Day-Date model’s accuracy are twice as stringent as those for an officially certified chronometer. The Day-Date is, unlike the majority of Rolex models, available only in precious metals like platinum, white, yellow and rose gold. Its unique “President” bracelet was designed specifically for its launch in 1956. In 1977, this unprecedented model was further enhanced to allow a quick-set date system.

The coveted reputation

The Rolex Day-Date is dubbed the Rolex President. Was it because it exudes a palpable aura of power and influence or because, of all Rolex models, it’s been most donned and loved by presidents, royalty, dignitaries, luminaries and doyens across the board? Lyndon Johnson was the first U.S. President to wear the Day-Date. In 1966 Rolex emphasized the connection with the Oval Office in their advertising campaign for that model. JFK was also said to have been given a yellow gold Day-Date by Marilyn Monroe for his birthday in 1962. That was the same birthday she also serenaded him with the infamous “Happy birthday, Mr. President” song. It seems that the celebrities that have worn this magnificent model have vested it with attraction that goes beyond its superior features.
