Most Popular Engagement Ring Trends for 2020
Publish date
December 31, 2019
There’s nothing more stressful than selecting an engagement ring for your future bride-to-be. There are so many choices to consider, from the size of the diamond, to the type of metal, and every tiny detail in between. Luckily, you can look to current trends to help guide your selection. Planning to pop the question in the New Year? Don’t take the plunge before getting familiar with the most popular engagement ring trends for 2020!
Yellow Gold Engagement Rings
As vintage inspired designs continue to dominate, yellow gold engagement rings have emerged as a leading choice for brides-to-be in 2020. Gleaming gold jewelry was the go-to trend for 2019, with dainty hoops and delicate gold stacking rings prevailing as some of the most popular styles. It was only a matter of time before this jewelry trend found its way to engagement rings. Yellow gold pairs beautifully with traditional solitaires, as well as more modern designs like asymmetrical engagement rings. If you’re in search of a metal that’s easy to care for and flattering on just about everyone, yellow gold makes a superb choice!
Elongated Diamond Engagement Rings
Increasingly, brides-to-be are seeking less traditional diamond shapes for their engagement ring. Pear shapes were seen everywhere in 2019, a trend inspired by the likes of Ariana Grande and Paris Hilton. In 2020, however, expect to see fewer pears and far more oval, emerald, and radiant cuts. Because the demand for these diamond shapes is much less than that of round brilliant cuts, couples can save by opting for an elongated diamond engagement ring.
Elaborate Eternity Bands
Does your future bride ogle over anything that glitters and glistens? Then an elaborate eternity band is an absolute must-have! Eternity bands offer breathtaking sparkle from every angle, with diamonds encircling the entire ring. They’re the perfect stand-in for those days when she doesn’t feel like fussing with her engagement ring, but still wants to dress up her look with diamonds. To make her eternity band truly exceptional, consider choosing fancy shaped diamonds like oval or emerald cuts.
Solitaire Engagement Rings with Subtle Details
If your blushing bride craves something more classic, a solitaire engagement ring is an ideal choice. Traditional solitaires are stunning all on their own, but the addition of certain subtle details can make them even more exquisite and enchanting. Consider adding embellishments like small side stones, mixed metal prongs, or even a braided metal band inspired by Mother Nature’s magnificence. Depending on your future bride’s style, there are plenty of delicate details you can select to make her ring even more remarkable.
Hidden Halo Engagement Rings
Speaking of discreet details, 2020 will be the year of hidden halo engagement rings. While halo settings have reigned supreme for years, this new variation is another option for those seeking something more soft and understated. When viewed from the top, the ring simply looks like a solitaire. But, when viewed from the side, the intricacies of the hidden halo are revealed for a splendid and sparkling surprise!
Colored Gemstone Engagement Rings
As far as engagement ring trends go, colored gemstones always make an alluring alternative to your ordinary diamond. Gemstones like ruby, sapphire, and emerald are all excellent choices, offering a bolder, brighter appearance than colorless diamonds. If planning to purchase a gemstone engagement ring, be sure the gem you choose is durable enough for everyday wear. Stones like opal, peridot, and garnet are poor choices for an engagement ring, as they tend to be softer and less stable.
Sustainable Engagement Rings
In recent years, a growing number of consumers have concerned themselves with brand transparency and sustainability. In other words, they seek to support retailers whose values and practices align with their own. This surge of conscious consumers has paved way for a flourishing lab-grown diamond industry, with well-known vendors like Brilliant Earth, James Allen, and even De Beers jumping on board. While naturally mined diamonds continue to saturate the market, it’s only a matter of time before lab-grown substitutes are a commonplace offering in jewelry stores worldwide.

Campfire Proposal
Fall is an excellent time of year for camping or a backyard bonfire, with just the right amount of chill in the air and spectacular scenery everywhere you look. And what makes a better backdrop for a romantic proposal than a cozy campfire? Snuggle up with your sweetheart, a warm blanket, and a bottle of champagne to set the mood just right. Once you’ve created the ideal ambiance, take this intimate opportunity to profess your love and pop the question.
Pumpkin Patch Proposal
Every autumn, families flock to the pumpkin patch for the quintessential fall experience. After all, who doesn’t love haunted hayrides, petting zoos, and pony rides? If you and your beloved enjoy the nostalgia of this timeless fall tradition, a pumpkin patch proposal may be perfect for you! Bundle up in your favorite fall sweaters, enjoy a cup of hot apple cider, and take in all of the sights and sounds of your childhood. After partaking in all of the fall festivities, find a quiet moment together to get down on one knee.
Pumpkin Carving Proposal
Once you and your true love have found the perfect pumpkins, it’s time to get carving! This presents yet another opportunity for a romantic outdoor proposal that’s sure to take her breath away. Plan an evening together to carve your masterpieces, and tell her you’d like to wait till the end to unveil your handiwork. You can use a printable template to carve “Will you marry me?” into your pumpkin, or even multiple pumpkins if you have the time. Then, once your pumpkin(s) are lit up with a candle, it’s time for the big reveal. Your bride-to-be is sure to be swept away by this sentimental gesture. Plus, a pumpkin carving proposal makes for a great fall photo-op.
Orchard Proposal
Nothing says fall like an afternoon spent apple picking. Harvest some fresh fruit with your love while enjoying the crisp autumn air. Settle down in a quiet spot for a picnic in the grass, and seize this moment to ask for her hand. Once she says “yes,” you can head home with your haul and bake a delicious dessert together to celebrate the occasion.
Park Proposal
The ultimate outdoor proposal ideas for fall include beautiful backdrops that make the moment even more memorable. Luckily, there are plenty of parks around the country that offer wondrous views of the changing fall foliage. Surprise her with a stroll through a picturesque park and when the moment feels just right, get down on one knee and present her with the glittering diamond ring she’s always dreamed of. Be sure to get some snapshots with the lovely autumn leaves to remember the moment for years to come.
Corn Maze Proposal
The festivities of fall just aren’t complete without a trip to a corn maze. You and your love can work together, navigating all of the twists and turns. She’ll be so distracted trying to find the right route, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to catch her off guard. Kneel down and pop the question in a corner secluded by towering corn stalks, or save your surprise for the end, when you’ve finally found your way.
Winery Proposal
Autumn is one of the best times of year to take a winery tour, as many types of wine grapes are harvested between August and October. Wineries are also a superb location for planning an epic outdoor proposal. Not only do wineries boast stunning scenery, they also tend to offer an array of outdoor activities to enjoy. Sip on some flavorful reds and whites, indulge in some fresh local fare, tour the vineyard, and take advantage of a relaxing afternoon with your future bride-to-be. With the help of a little liquid courage, asking for her hand might feel a tad less frightening.

Engagement Traditions & Their Origins
Publish date
October 8, 2019
There are plenty of engagement traditions that people follow without ever really knowing why. Whether it’s popping the question with a diamond ring, or dropping down to one knee, every engagement tradition has a fascinating historic origin. If you’ve ever wondered why we observe these odd customs, we’ve got the answers. Continue reading to learn more!
Asking for Her Hand
Before popping the question, tradition says the groom should first seek blessing from the bride-to-be’s father. This is common practice in many cultures, and likely originated during a time when women weren’t exactly seen as equals. Nowadays, engagements and marriage are all about romance, but historically, marriage was a social contract between two families. A bride’s primary purpose was to reproduce so that a family’s name could be carried down to the next generation. If a prospective suitor was denied permission from the father, a couple’s courtship was considered over and done with.
The 3 Months’ Salary Rule
While the history of this rule is a little fuzzy, it seems to have stemmed from the idea that diamonds are rare and therefore, very expensive. Diamonds actually occur quite abundantly, but that hasn’t stopped manufacturers from promoting them as a scarce commodity. In fact, the De Beers diamond company is credited with controlling diamond supply and demand since the late 19th century, when massive mines were discovered in South Africa. These new, substantial sources threatened the value of diamonds, contradicting claims of their rarity. De Beers took swift action, monopolizing the industry of diamond manufacturing and trading. By taking control of the entire enterprise, De Beers was able to accumulate generous quantities of diamonds and strategically sell them for a premium price. By doing so, they’ve managed to maintain the misconception that diamonds are available only in short supply, and are inherently valuable. It’s no wonder the general population still believes they have to spend a small fortune on an engagement ring. But, the truth is, there are no real rules to how much one should spend on an engagement ring. The most important thing is that your bride-to-be is thrilled with her ring, and that you didn’t dig yourself in debt to buy it.
Getting Down on One Knee
You’ve probably heard that chivalry is dead, but this popular engagement tradition proves otherwise. The custom of proposing to your sweetheart on one knee dates back to the medieval days of knighthood and ceremonious courtship. Getting down on one knee is a gesture of respect and loyalty, and in the case of a proposal, is a declaration of love and devotion.
The Engagement Ring
Surprisingly, rings are one of the oldest engagement traditions in history. The idea was introduced in the year 1215 by Pope Innocent III, who ordered that couples intending to marry must wait for a short period between the betrothal and wedding ceremony. As a symbol of this betrothal, couples were expected to wear a ring, typically made of some sort of inexpensive metal. Rings made from precious metals were worn exclusively by the elite, indicating to others their wealth and social status.
Diamonds
Most women imagine their ideal engagement ring set with a dazzling diamond. However, diamonds have not always been the quintessential emblem of engagements. This practice originated around 1477, when Archduke Maximillian of Austria commissioned a diamond engagement ring for his beloved, Mary of Burgundy. It’s believed to be the first diamond engagement ring ever created, and is thought to have inspired other wealthy aristocrats to follow suit.
The Ring Finger
Everyone knows that engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, but not everyone knows the reason why. The origins of this tradition can be traced back to Ancient Rome, when it was believed that the vein in the ring finger ran directly to a person’s heart. They referred to this vein as the “vena amoris,” which translates to “vein of love.” Needless to say, this finger was a natural choice for the placement of an engagement ring, the most romantic symbol of love and tenderness.
Announcing the Engagement
This engagement tradition ties in with the exchange of engagement rings. When Pope Innocent III mandated couples wear engagement rings, he also ordered them to make a formal announcement of their pledge to marry. The reasoning being that if anyone had any objection to the union, there would be ample time to protest and intervene. Nowadays, most couples just announce their engagement on social media, which makes it easier for their message to reach all of their family and friends.

Engagement Ring Financing: What You Need to Know
Publish date
August 30, 2019
An engagement ring is no small investment. In fact, besides your home and vehicle, it’s likely the largest purchase you’ll ever make. Though most people plan for such an expenditure, saving the exact amount you need is tricky. After all, if you’ve yet to find the ring of her dreams, how can you anticipate how much it may cost?
Tradition tells us that to save for an engagement ring, one should put away at least three months’ salary. But as the cost of living continues to rise, this rule has become increasingly outdated, and saving can seem downright impossible for many people. So, how does one go about finding the perfect ring without a huge wad of cash in hand? Luckily, there are plenty of options for engagement ring financing that, when done wisely, can make this expense much easier to manage.
What are Your Financing Options
If you decide to finance an engagement ring, it’s best to know your options before you buy. The following are a few different routes you can explore to determine which best fits your financial needs.
Jewelry Store Financing
Nearly every major jewelry store offers in-store financing options. Many even defer interest payments for a short introductory period, giving you time to pay off the principle balance. Applying for financing from your jewelry store is generally as simple as filling out an application and waiting for a quick credit check. Should this be the option you choose, be sure you have a ring in mind before submitting your application, as to avoid too many credit inquiries. And if there’s an interest-free introductory period, be sure to pay off your balance within that window of time to avoid being hit by a high APR.
Credit Cards
Like any large purchase, you always have the option to finance an engagement ring with a credit card. Though you run the risk of facing high interest rates, there are some cards that offer up to 18 months with 0% APR. If you break that down, a $2,500 engagement ring could be paid off in less than two years, and cost less than $150 a month. Making small payments each month is often easier for folks to manage, which is why plenty of people opt for financing with a credit card. Not to mention, most credit card companies now offer rewards programs that make them even more enticing to customers.
Personal Loans
If you’re looking to avoid credit cards and the looming threat of high interest, personal loans are yet another option for financing an engagement ring. Though very similar to credit cards, personal loans tend to have fixed interest rates. You’ll receive the entire sum up front, and can pay it back over an agreed upon length of time. Be sure to know whether you’re applying for a secured or unsecured personal loan. A secured personal loan will require you to provide some sort of collateral, while an unsecured loan will examine your credit and financial history. Also, confirm whether there are any additional costs to you, like an initiation or annual fee.
Alternative Financing Options
If you’re weary about adding to your debt with a credit card or personal loan, that’s totally understandable. With a little planning and perseverance, you can still make the ring of her dreams a reality. Some alternative ways you can save up for the perfect engagement ring include:
- Analyzing your budget and finding ways to cut back your monthly spending
- Working a side job or doing freelance work to save some extra cash
- Using money from a retirement or alternate savings account
- Selling unwanted or unused items online or at a garage sale
- Borrowing cash from a close family member or friend
Should You Finance an Engagement Ring?
Still wondering whether you should finance an engagement ring? Ultimately, the decision is yours to make. Only you know the details of your personal finances, and what you can realistically manage. Do you consider yourself financially savvy, and are confident that you can quickly pay off your balance? Then there’s no reason not to take advantage of engagement ring financing! When used wisely, these financing options can work to your advantage, and relieve the pressure that accompanies purchasing an engagement ring.

Amazing Art Deco Engagement Rings
Publish date
August 21, 2019
While some brides-to-be prefer a classic solitaire engagement ring, others long for something with a bit more charm and character. Hence the recent revival of magnificent Art Deco engagement rings.
The Art Deco era is popularly referred to as the Roaring 20’s, a decade known for its artistic and cultural vigor, and the jewelry is no exception. Art Deco engagement rings are truly one-of-a-kind, offering distinct designs that you just don’t see every day. If an antique or vintage engagement ring is something that piques your interest, continue reading to learn more about one of history’s most beloved eras.
The Art Deco Period
The Art Deco era spanned from about 1915 to 1935, and marked a period of progress, exploration, and exuberance. The name “Art Deco” is derived from the International Exposition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts that took place in Paris, France in 1925. This World’s Fair ran for 7 months, and featured nearly 15,000 exhibits that highlighted the new style moderne of architecture, furniture, decorative art, and of course—jewelry.
Art Deco Influences
The Art Deco period drew influence from a few different art styles of the 20th century. Besides borrowing inspiration from Aztec and Egyptian art, Art Deco designs embodied the geometric shapes of Cubism, the mechanical forms of Constructivism and Futurism, and the vibrant colors of Parisian Fauvism. Following the first World War, the economy was flourishing, jazz music was booming, and Prohibition was in full swing. The country appeared to be moving in a more modern direction, and the Art Deco style perfectly captured the spirit and enthusiasm of the era.
Art Deco Engagement Ring Elements
When shopping for an Art Deco engagement ring, there are some key characteristics to look out for. Identifying these unique design elements will help you determine which jewelry did in fact originate from the era. The following are just a few defining hallmarks of Art Deco engagement rings to help you narrow your search!
Geometric Shapes
One of the defining characteristics of Art Deco engagement rings is the use of geometric shapes. Hexagons, triangles, squares, and other linear shapes were used to create symmetrical styles that are simply striking on the hand.
Filigree & Milgrain Details
Art Deco engagement rings are often incredibly detailed, with intricate design elements like filigree and milgraining. Filigree is the delicate metal work characteristic of most vintage designs. Thanks to advancements in technology, filigree during the Art Deco era was exceptionally complex and precise. Such elaborate metal work is difficult to replicate, even with today’s techniques. Filigree is often paired with milgraining, which is tiny metal beading used as a border for various types of jewelry. Boasting such quality and attention to detail, Art Deco engagement rings are true masterpieces to cherish and preserve.
Bold Contrasting Colors
Contrary to the delicate, flowing style of the Edwardian era, Art Deco jewelry emphasized vibrant, contrasting colors that really catch the eye. Art Deco engagement ring designs commonly pair diamonds with vivid, colorful gemstones like emerald, sapphire, and ruby. This era of jewelry also saw the use of other, less common gems like coral, jade, and onyx. These precious stones were arranged in exotic shapes and patterns to create magnificent pieces of art.
Platinum & Diamonds
While colorful gemstones were certainly popular, diamonds were still the preferred centerpiece of Art Deco engagement rings. Diamonds were most often set in platinum, the metal of choice for the period. Jewelry makers favored platinum for its strength and durability, and because it was malleable enough to create the elaborate designs that were in such high-demand. White gold was also used as an affordable alternative to platinum, while yellow and rose gold were rarely used and considered to be out of style.
Diamond Cuts
- Old Mine Cut- Old mine cut diamonds were an early variation of the round brilliant cut. This diamond cut has a high crown, small table, and large culet, and most closely resembles a modern cushion cut.
- Old European Cut- Thanks to new technology, diamond cutters started crafting rounder diamonds, resulting in the old European cut. This particular shape shares more in common with the round brilliant cut, and even had the same number of facets.
- Emerald Cut- Emerald cut diamonds are a type of step-cut diamond that’s rectangular in shape with beveled corners. This type of diamond cut creates the illusion of a staircase, or hall of mirrors, for a look that’s truly mesmerizing.
- Asscher Cut- Asscher cut diamonds are another variation of step-cut stones, only with a square shape and large step facets. This diamond’s high crown produces incredible brilliance, and a kaleidoscopic effect similar to that of an emerald cut.
How to Buy an Art Deco Engagement Ring
Before buying an Art Deco engagement ring, there are some things to keep in mind. Because engagement rings from this era have intricate design elements, they can sometimes be tricky to resize. If you have your eye on an engagement ring, and are uncertain about its size, be sure to ask your jeweler before finalizing any purchase. Additionally, antique engagement rings don’t generally come with a diamond grading report, as this is a relatively new practice. Don’t immediately be deterred if your jeweler can’t provide a certification for the ring in question. The most important piece of advice for finding the perfect Art Deco engagement ring is to shop with a reputable jeweler. Not all jewelers offer the same quality and selection of antique and vintage engagement rings, which is why you should only shop with someone you trust.

Why Diamond Certificates Are Important
Publish date
August 8, 2019
Buying a diamond engagement ring is a big decision, both in terms of its financial and emotional significance. If you are searching for an ideal diamond ring, you surely know how overwhelming the process can be. Will your partner love it? Is the diamond quality worth the price?
There are so many considerations to be made when choosing a diamond ring. This is why diamond certification is essential if you want to be completely sure your fiancé receives a gift they will cherish for a lifetime.
Luckily, you won’t have to worry about anything if you rely on Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers for your diamond ring shopping. Our vast collection features the best engagement rings in San Diego which come with all the necessary certificates so you can be at ease.
What is a certified diamond?
A diamond certificate or a diamond dossier is a document obtained from a third-party laboratory which describes the characteristics of a diamond in detail. There are several laboratories which offer diamond certification, the most popular being GIA, IGI, AGS, GSI, EGL, and HRD.
Diamond certificates or reports vary among different laboratories in terms of the information they contain. Still, all labs provide information on the most significant characteristics of the diamond, including the 4 Cs (Color, Clarity, Cut, and Carat weight), the length and width as well as some details about the diamond’s polish and symmetry.
Should you buy a diamond without a certificate?
Is diamond certification truly necessary? Well, receiving a certificate with your purchased diamond is the only real assurance of your diamond’s quality and identity. Without a certificate, you won’t have any proof that the stone you purchased is worth what you paid for it.
The best way to go about buying a loose diamond or diamond jewelry is to ask your jeweler to present a certificate on the spot. A reputable seller should have no problem complying with this request and will take the time to explain the qualities of a diamond presented in the document. Be wary of jewelers who refuse to show you the certificate straight away, as well as those who promise to send you the certificate after you’ve purchased the diamond.
Another thing you should keep in mind is that some jewelers will try to scam the customer by giving them a certificate that doesn’t match the diamond you bought. Luckily, you can check this fairly easily by visiting the website of your certification lab and verifying your grading report.
Which diamond certification lab is best?
So which diamond certification should you look for when purchasing a diamond? If you live in the United States, you will most likely come across grading reports and certificates from the following laboratories:
GIA (Gemological Institute of America)
GIA is a non-profit laboratory that is widely considered the gold standard in the diamond certification industry. Ever since 1931, GIA has been the most respected, consistent and exacting diamond grading laboratory. The GIA grading includes details about the diamond’s measurements, 4 Cs, evaluation date, fluorescence grade, symmetry, polish, and more.
AGS (American Gem Society)
The AGS certification is the second most popular diamond grading option in the United States. Often compared to GIA, the AGS is known for their 0-9 cut grade scale (where the 0 grade is considered “ideal”) as well as their sophisticated approach to diamond grading. However, keep in mind that an AGS certified diamond may be rated 1-2 grades higher than it would be if it were certified by GIA since their grading system is slightly looser.
IGI (International Gemological Institute)
IGI is a for-profit diamond grading laboratory that used to be a popular choice for many jewelry chains in Europe and the U.S. However, lax grading standards and factory-like work ethics has made the IGI certification significantly less reputable and less consistent in comparison to GIA and AGS.

Natural Colored Diamonds: All You Need to Know
Publish date
August 8, 2019
When choosing a stone for their engagement ring, most people go with the classic colorless diamond. In recent years, however, colored diamonds, also known as “fancy” colored diamonds, have become increasingly popular. If you’re considering getting one for your partner, it’s important that you learn as much as you can about colored diamonds before you decide to purchase.
We can help! Leo Hamel Fine Jewelers can make your engagement ring shopping in San Diego effortless and highly enjoyable. With the help of our experienced and knowledgeable staff, you’ll find a ring that fits your loved one’s style perfectly in no time!
How many colors can a diamond be?
Natural colored diamonds can be found in a wide range of brilliant shades, from yellow, green, violet and blue to brown, orange, red, pink and black. Some of these colors, such as blue, green and red, are more expensive and sought after than others due to their rarity.
Fancy colored diamonds can differ in tone, hue, and saturation. The GIA grading system recognizes nine intensity levels: faint, very light, light, fancy light, fancy, fancy dark, fancy deep, fancy intense, and fancy vivid. The more saturated a diamond is, the more valuable it will be.
Brown fancy diamonds are the most popular option and are often marketed as champagne or cognac, depending on the intensity of the shade. Yellow diamonds, commonly referred to as canary diamonds, come second in popularity and are currently highly fashionable among glamorous celebrities. Fancy colored diamonds also include elegant black and deep gray stones and even fancy white diamonds that are often milky and opalescent in appearance.
Are all colored diamonds natural?
Since fancy colored diamonds are unique products of nature, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they usually come at staggering prices. Because of this, buying a beautiful fancy colored diamond for your fiancé isn’t a decision you want to take lightly, especially when you consider that some of the diamonds on the market are color-treated.
A technique called High Pressure High Temperature, or HPHT for short, is commonly used for enhancing the color of natural colored diamonds, making them more valuable and marketable than they were in their natural state. Although HPHT treated diamonds are still natural, not lab-grown, the technique is controversial because it can also be used to transform significantly cheaper colorless diamonds by turning them into a more desirable shade.
Even seasoned jewelers may find it difficult to identify proof of HPHT treatment. So, if you’re looking to buy an untreated fancy colored diamond that is truly one of a kind, you need to choose a reputable jeweler and expect the stone to come at a whopping price.
What you need to know when buying a colored diamond
If you’ve decided to make your significant other jump for joy by surprising them with a fancy colored diamond, here are some tips that can help ensure that both of you are happy with the choice:
- The price is your best indicator: a fancy colored diamond that wasn’t treated will naturally cost significantly more than a treatment enhanced stone.
- Buy only GIA certified diamonds: make sure to ask for a GIA certificate if you want to be absolutely sure of the origin and characteristics of your fancy colored diamond.
- Buy from a trusted seller: the only way to be sure your colored diamond is genuine and fairly priced is to purchase it from an experienced, reputable jeweler.

Buying an Engagement Ring: What You Need to Know
Publish date
July 26, 2019
So, you’ve found the love of your life. You plan the ideal moment to get down on one knee, you ask the biggest, most important question of your life, holding what you hope is the perfect engagement ring. She says yes and you’re over the moon with joy!
There’s no denying the significance of engagement rings for couples about to become husband and wife. This ring represents love, commitment, hope, treasured memories shared together, and even more priceless moments to come.
In many cases, buying an engagement ring is a couple’s first experience shopping for fine jewelry, which can leave everyone a little flustered, confused, and concerned about making the right choice. This should be a time for happiness and celebration, not wide eyes and furrowed brows. Which is why we’ve come up with a few stress-relieving tips for how to shop for the engagement ring of her dreams.
Setting a Budget
It’s helpful to have an idea of what you want to spend before you go shopping. Today, the average amount spent on an engagement ring is around $3,000 to $4,000. Only five percent of grooms spend more than $10,000. You may have saved up for this important purchase, but you can also research financing options, including personal credit cards, lines of credit, and interest-free financing to make this large expense a little easier on your wallet.
Don’t let budget alone determine what you’re going to buy. If you are going for the traditional diamond ring, remember that diamonds are forever—time does not break them down. Historically, diamonds have doubled in value every 10 years, so they’re a smart choice for a long-term investment. Consider the emotional value of this once-in-a-lifetime purchase; choose something that you both will be proud of and she’ll love to wear for years to come.
Some people value size over quality, while some folks go for the best quality they can afford even if it means sacrificing size. If the diamond of her dreams is not in your budget right now, remember that at Leo Hamel Fine Jewelry & Engagement Ring Store, you can trade in your diamond for a larger one down the road.
Another great option is to consider buying a vintage engagement ring. It’s eco-friendly and you can find a truly unique ring with a very favorable price tag. No one will know you didn’t buy it new, in fact it might even be mistaken for a custom design!
Shopping for Quality and Value in Diamonds
Quality and value are two things you should consider when shopping for a diamond engagement ring, and they are largely determined by four criteria called “the 4 Cs”, clarity, color, cut, and carat.
Clarity
Clarity can significantly add to the beauty of a diamond, but the higher the clarity, the higher the price per carat. Diamond clarity is graded on this rating system:
- Flawless – No imperfections when viewed with 10x magnification
- VVS – Very, very slightly included (inclusions are very slight imperfections within the diamond)
- VS – Very slightly included
- SI – Slightly included
- I – Included
Do you have to buy a flawless diamond for it to look dazzling? Absolutely not! Generally, imperfections in diamonds graded VS and above cannot be seen with the naked eye. Even most SI graded diamonds do not have visible imperfections and can be stunning with the right cut. Some people tend to value size over quality and would rather have an I graded diamond that is larger, but costs less per carat. It’s really dependent on the individual and their personal taste.
Color
A diamond’s color is the general body color when viewed from the side. The less body color, the higher the cost per carat, excluding special colors. Diamonds range in color from D to Z, starting with D—colorless or pure white—through increasing amounts of yellow, all the way to Z— a dark, fancy yellow color. It isn’t necessary to buy a D color diamond! Body color is usually not noticeable in diamonds ranging all the way down to G, H, and I, especially with a well-cut diamond. Even lower colors can “face up white,” especially if set in yellow gold.
Cut
Cut refers to how well the diamond is faceted, and of the 4 Cs is the single greatest influence on a diamond’s beauty. The modern round brilliant cut was actually mathematically determined to produce the most brilliance and scintillation in a diamond.
The “ideal cut” diamond is cut to specific proportions within a range. However, not all ideal cut diamonds are equal! To see “The World’s Most Perfectly Cut Diamond,” visit us at Leo Hamel’s and ask about Hearts On Fire® diamonds, which are cut using 100 power magnification instead of the industry standard of 10 power. Only 1/10 of 1% of all diamonds is cut to Hearts On Fire® standards, and the difference is evident, even from across the room.
Carat weight
Diamonds are measured by weight, not by size. Carat weight is designated by points, with 100 points in a carat (notated 1.00 carat), so a 50-point diamond is half a carat (notated 0.50 carat) and so on. Generally, the heavier the diamond, the larger it appears, although an excellent cut will make a smaller diamond appear larger because the maximum amount of light is being refracted. Shallowly cut diamonds will also appear larger than their carat weight, but will lack the brilliance of a well-cut stone.
Diamonds are priced per carat, so the more carats in weight, the higher the price. Larger diamonds are rarer, so they will cost more per carat than smaller diamonds just based on size alone. 250,000 tons of earth will be moved and one million diamonds will be mined for every 1.00 carat diamond that is discovered! Five million diamonds will be mined for every 2.00 carat stone that is unearthed! No wonder diamonds of a carat or more are so prized!

There are dozens of locations around the world that make a beautiful backdrop for a romantic proposal, whether you fancy an exotic island getaway, an overseas excursion, or even an outdoors adventure. With a little time and some careful coordinating, it’s possible to pull off the proposal she’s always dreamed of. For a little inspiration, check out our list of the most romantic places in the world to propose.
1. Paris, France
Paris is believed to be one of the most romantic cities in the world, so it’s no wonder it’s a popular destination for proposals. The city offers plenty of sights, so you have some options when choosing the ideal spot to pop the question. An evening proposal before the Eiffel Tower is sure to leave her starry-eyed, while a rooftop rendezvous will take her breath away with panoramic views of Paris.
2. Central Park—New York City, New York
How many of your favorite romantic films are set in New York City? Few places in the world offer so many sights, so it’s no surprise that it’s become a hot spot for memorable marriage proposals. One of the most popular proposal locations is Central Park, with its lush landscape, and picturesque scenery. The park offers several secluded spots to surprise your loved one, including the serene Shakespeare Garden and the famous Bow Bridge.
3. Cliffs of Moher—Ireland
If it’s a breathtaking view you seek, nothing quite compares to the Cliffs of Moher in southeast Ireland. These astonishing coastal cliffs stretch nearly five miles long, covered in a blanket of rich green grass. And, if you’re visiting in spring or summer, you can expect to see beautiful wild flowers blooming along the cliff side. To avoid having to share your special moment with company, we recommend planning an early morning proposal.
4. Venice—Italy
With its winding canals, hidden bridges, and cobble stoned streets, Venice has long been considered a place of love. Enjoy a relaxing gondola ride with your sweetheart, indulge in a romantic dinner for two, and propose with a picture-perfect backdrop of the Rialto Bridge or the Piazza San Marco. You’re both sure to remember the moment for years to come.
5. Tower Bridge—London, UK
The Tower Bridge of London is one of the city’s many historic landmarks, famous for its sweeping views of the metropolis. The bridge’s high level walkways were closed for decades, but eventually reopened to the public in 1982. These walkways feature glass floors through which visitors can enjoy views of the River Thames. The space can be reserved for private events, meaning you and your loved one can share an intimate proposal, just the two of you, or strictly with family and friends.
6. Lake Louise—Canada
Do you and your darling share a thirst for adventure? Lake Louise offers a stunning setting for an unforgettable marriage proposal, with magnificent snow-capped mountains and crystal clear, turquoise water. There are several great spots to get a close up of the lake and surrounding forest, making it the ideal place to capture some extraordinary photos. While you’re visiting, explore one of Lake Louise’s many hiking trails, dine on some killer cuisine, and enjoy a range of outdoor activities.
7. Disney World—Orlando, Florida
Just like the fairy-tales we grew up with, every young girl dreams of finding her prince charming. Why not fulfill her childhood fantasy with a passionate proposal at the most magical place on earth? Disney World is one of the hottest spots to get engaged, and with so much to see and do, it’s easy to see why. Can’t decide where in the park to pop the question? Cinderella’s castle is an ever popular choice, though it’s far from your only option. You can surprise her while riding her favorite attraction, during the park’s spectacular fireworks show, or at one of the resort’s several romantic restaurants.
8. Santorini—Greece
Of all the Greek islands, Santorini is considered to be the most romantic, with its sparkling blue seas, and swoon worthy sunsets. A beautiful city set on the cliff side, Santorini boasts panoramic views of the Aegean Sea, world class wine tasting, and plenty of ancient architecture to appeal to your inner historian. Celebrate your love with an oceanfront proposal, followed by a toast of her favorite wine, and an evening stroll through the stone streets of one of Santorini’s quaint villages.
9. Mayan Ruins—Tulum, Mexico
If your bride-to-be enjoys exploring centuries-old civilizations, there’s no better place to propose than the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, Mexico. Perfectly positioned near the seaside and surrounded by dense jungle, Tulum is the best balance of adventure and tranquility. After she says “yes”, the two of you can take advantage of all that Tulum has to offer. Take a peek around the wondrous Mayan temple overlooking the sparkling waters of the Caribbean Sea, enjoy an exciting ATV tour, or learn how to prepare some tasty, authentic cuisine with a private cooking class.
10. Neuschwanstein Castle—Bavaria, Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle looks like something straight from the pages of a fairytale, with its magnificent towers, beautiful balconies, and splendid statues. In fact, this architectural wonder is believed to have inspired Disney’s famed Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. Located along Germany’s “Romantic Road,” Neuschwanstein Castle offers guests guided tours of the palace, as well as a number of nearby hiking trails to take in the view from every angle. To get the best snapshot of the castle in the background, plan to pop the question at Marienbrücke bridge, just a short walk away.
11. Northern Lights—Iceland
For a truly memorable occasion that she’ll never forget, nothing beats a proposal beneath the Northern Lights in Iceland. While this does require a bit of planning, it will be a once in a lifetime experience for the both of you. The best time for viewing is between April and September, given the weather is clear, so the longer you visit, the more chance you’ll have of catching a glimpse of this fleeting phenomenon. If you plan things just right, your sweetheart is sure to be taken by surprise!
12. Sydney Opera House—Sydney, Australia
Sydney Opera House is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the entire world, which explains why it’s a go-to destination for proposals. Sydney offers the best of laid-back beach life balanced by the excitement of a bustling city. Plus, there are a few great options for the ideal proposal spot.
