Fascinating January Birthstone Facts
Publish date
January 21, 2020
Garnet is a glittering red gem that also happens to be the birthstone for January. Both abundant and affordable, garnet actually refers to a group of minerals with a similar chemical composition. The most common types of garnet include almandine, andradite, spessartine, and pyrope, among others. Each of these variations has a unique appearance that makes them incredibly attractive for use in jewelry.
With such diversity, and a storied history as vibrant as its color, it’s no wonder garnet is so well-loved. For extra insight into this incredible gemstone, keep reading to discover more fascinating January birthstone facts!
Garnet History
Garnets have been cherished since the Bronze Age, revered for their deep color and durability. Evidence of their illustriousness can be found in countless cultures, dating as far back as the biblical era. Necklaces adorned with garnets were worn by ancient Egyptian pharaohs, and the wealthy nobility of the Victorian era were particularly partial to these rich red gems. According to the Jewish Talmud, Noah’s ark was lit by a single garnet stone. Regarded as a Warrior’s Stone during the Middle Ages, garnet was worn as a talisman by Christian crusaders, ensuring safety and protection over long journeys.
Garnet Care
Garnet is a fairly durable gemstone, and can last a lifetime when cared for properly. With a rating of 6.5 to 7.5 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, garnet is an ideal gemstone for jewelry. Only those items with a higher Mohs rating will scratch the surface of garnet. That being said, jewelry like earrings and pendants will be less susceptible to damage than say a garnet ring, which will encounter more wear and tear.
Unlike other gemstones, garnets are generally sold without any additional treatments. Most naturally occurring garnets are saturated enough in color, that further gemstone treatments are not necessary. Occasionally, garnets are fracture filled, which simply means that any surface scratches are smoothed over with a glass-like substance.
To clean your garnet jewelry, use a soft bristled brush and a bit of warm soapy water to gently remove dirt and buildup. Avoid steam cleaners, and be cautious of ultrasonic cleaners if your stone has been fracture filled.
Garnet Meaning & Symbolism
The name garnet is derived from the Latin word granatus, which means seeds or grains. The name was likely given because garnets closely resemble the tiny red seeds you’d find in a pomegranate. Garnet is said to symbolize long lasting love and friendship, and according to Greek mythology, can ensure the safe reunion of two parted lovers. In the Medieval period, garnet was worn to ward off nightmares. Some well-known attributes of garnet include passion, fidelity, loyalty, devotion, consistency, and truth. Wearing garnet is said to sharpen one’s self-perception, as well as their understanding of others.
Garnet Healing Properties
Throughout history, garnet has been associated with various healing practices. The gem’s intense red color has been compared to that of blood, which is why they’ve been used for treating different blood and inflammatory diseases. They’re also helpful in ridding your body of harmful toxins that can result in illness. Garnet has also been used as a tool to treat depression, break old habits and patterns, and to jolt the heart to encourage introspection and self-awareness.

Garnet jewelry makes a superb gift for celebrating a friendship, a January birthday, or a 2nd wedding anniversary. When purchasing garnet jewelry, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First, garnets come in a range of colors other than red, including green, pink, and even blue. While garnet is fairly affordable, unusual colors are rarer, and therefore more expensive.
Some garnets have inclusions that are thought to actually enhance the stone’s beauty, like “horsetails” that occur in demantoid garnets, or the “turbulent” appearance of hessonite garnets. Don’t be instantly deterred by these inclusions, as they only add to the gem’s uniqueness and charm.
If you’re shopping for antique jewelry, be aware that some pieces contain a dark red glass that was used in place of garnet. In these cases, it’s best to have the item tested for authenticity before finalizing your purchase.

Heirloom Jewelry: Redesigning & Repurposing
Publish date
January 9, 2020
There’s nothing more sentimental than inheriting a magnificent piece of heirloom jewelry. Whether it’s a piece that’s been in your family for generations, or something special that a relative’s been keeping just for you, heirloom jewelry is truly priceless. Unfortunately for some, their heirloom jewelry just isn’t suited to their style. Maybe it’s an ornate pair of earrings, or a ring that’s two sizes too tiny. Whatever the case may be, there are countless ways you can create something spectacular by redesigning or repurposing your heirloom jewelry.
What is Heirloom Jewelry?
Heirloom jewelry pieces are those which are passed down from one generation to the next. Be it a precious strand of pearls that belonged to your great grandmother, or a timeless diamond tennis bracelet from a distant aunt, heirlooms give you a glimpse into your family’s unique history. While heirloom jewelry grants us a sneak peek at generations passed, it also tends to be a bit dated. In fact, many of these time-honored treasures wind up unworn and shoved in the back of jewelry boxes. Fortunately, there are an abundance of options for turning your heirloom jewelry into a piece you’ll want to wear with pride.
Choosing the Perfect Piece
If you’ve inherited a collection of items, you may be debating over which item to alter. Many people grapple with guilt about modifying such cherished possessions, which is perfectly normal. It’s natural to have hesitations, but keep in mind that it’s still the same prized piece, just adjusted to your taste. When choosing the right item to repurpose, there are a few factors to consider.
First, which types of jewelry do you prefer wearing? Some people favor wearing a modest pendant necklace, while others tend to opt for earrings or bracelets. The piece you choose to repurpose should be one you’ll feel comfortable wearing. If you have a habit of fidgeting with your hands, then you may want to forgo a bracelet or ring for a necklace or earrings.
Another thing to keep in mind is the quality of the heirloom jewelry in question. Are the pieces made from genuine precious metal? Are the diamonds or gemstones still fairly durable? It’s not recommended to repurpose any items deemed as costume jewelry, like that of Chanel or Versace. Costume pieces can be easily damaged by standard jewelry repair techniques like polishing or steam cleaning, and are best maintained in their original form.
Meeting with a Jeweler
Before moving forward with plans to repurpose your heirloom jewelry, you should first meet with a reputable jeweler. They’ll help walk you through the process, as well as answer any questions you may have. If you’re short on ideas for sprucing up your beloved belonging, a jeweler will be able to give you some suggestions that’ll stir up your imagination. Once you have a sense of what you want, your jeweler will work to bring your concept to life with care and impressive attention to detail.
Ideas for Upgrading Your Heirloom Jewelry
- Wear your heirloom jewelry in a new way- Perhaps you have a piece of heirloom jewelry you love, but don’t feel comfortable wearing as it was intended. Not to worry! With a little creativity, you can rethink how the piece is worn to make it work for your style. A long necklace can be transformed into a bracelet with a few wraps around the wrist, while a ring can be re-imagined as a delicate pendant.
- Turn a larger piece into several small pieces- The diamonds from an antique brooch can be used to create a pleasing pair of diamond studs. Or you can take the gemstones from an ultra-glamorous cocktail ring and turn them into a matching pendant and bracelet. Most heirloom jewelry originates from a period when jewelry was handcrafted from metals and gems of the utmost quality. In other words, these treasures, as well as each element that comprises them, were designed to last a lifetime.
- Reset a precious diamond or gemstone- Have you recently inherited your grandmother’s engagement ring? Or maybe you’ve been gifted a beautiful antique brooch that’s been in your family for centuries. Breathe new life into your beloved heirloom by resetting the precious stones. Plenty of people reset heirloom diamonds or gemstones to craft something splendid. It’s a chance to carry a piece of your loved one with you wherever you go, and an opportunity to create something you can pass on to your own children.
- Upgrade your metal- As mentioned, heirloom jewelry can be a bit old-fashioned and outdated. Perhaps you have an incredible old mine cut diamond that looks a little dull in its yellow gold setting. Upgrading the metal can make a world of difference. Swapping yellow gold with platinum will help give your diamond a brighter and more radiant appearance.

December Birthstones History & Meaning
Publish date
December 18, 2019
December birthstones aren’t the colors you’d expect, as shopping during the month of December you’re bombarded with holiday hues like red and green. But when shopping for a December baby, you have an entirely different color palette to discover. Shopping for a loved one born in the month of December can be a little tricky since you have to find them a birthday gift in addition to a holiday gift. However, you can make searching for the perfect gift easier by purchasing beautiful December birthstone jewelry!
December babies are lucky enough to have not two, but three different birthstones: turquoise, blue zircon, and tanzanite. These glittering gemstones range from the oldest on earth (zircon), to one of the first mined and used in jewelry (turquoise), to one of the most freshly discovered (tanzanite). All of the December birthstones are available in a variety of shades ranging from blue to violet, so you’re sure to find something to entice your loved one. Here are some fascinating details about these dazzling December birthstones to help you decide!
Turquoise: A Precious Ancient Gemstone
Revered since ancient times, turquoise is known for its distinct color, which ranges from bright robin’s egg to pastel blue to a light bluish green. Turquoise might lack the sparkle and clarity of transparent colored gemstones, but what it lacks in brilliance, it makes up for in soul-satisfying color. This December birthstone has been highly regarded for thousands of years by cultures like the Native Americans, Aztecs, and the ancient Egyptians. Throughout its history, people have attributed special powers to turquoise. Turquoise is thought to offer safety from misfortune and ward off ill will. Turquoise is also thought to protect its wearer from harm while bringing good luck and longevity. In lighter shades, turquoise energy is believed to promote inner harmony and tranquility. Darker, richer tones are alleged to counter intolerance and allow us adapt to new ideas and environments.
The word turquoise means “stone from Turkey” since the gemstone was brought from Turkey to Western Europe. Turquoise is a relatively soft gemstone, which makes it ideal for carving unique pieces of jewelry. If you know a December baby who loves bold, statement accessories, they are sure to love turquoise jewelry.
How to care for turquoise:
No matter the kind of turquoise jewelry you decide to gift your December loved one, it’s important that they know to take special care of it. High temperatures can damage its surface or cause discoloration. Exposure to chemicals, cosmetics, and even the natural oils in skin can alter its color. Turquoise should always be cleaned with warm soapy water, never in steam or ultrasonic cleaners.
Blue Zircon: Beautiful from the Beginning
Zircon is the oldest natural mineral on Earth, dating back 4.4 billion years. Zircon can be found in a myriad of colors, including blue, brown, green, orange, yellow, red, and even clear. Heat treatment is commonly used to intensify these beautiful colors. During the middle ages, people believed zircon could stimulate sound sleep, ward off evil, and deliver prosperity and wisdom. Today, zircon is considered a grounding stone that heightens confidence and compassion. With this gemstone, you have plenty of beautiful color options. While blue zircon is a common December birthstone, you can certainly purchase other colors to match your December-born loved one’s favorite hue. That way, you know you’re buying a can’t-miss gift!
How to care for blue zircon:
As with turquoise, zircon requires special care. Zircon tends to be brittle, so it’s best worn and stored in a manner that avoids hard rubbing against other materials. Since most zircon is heat treated, there’s a possibility it may revert back to its original color if exposed to high heat and bright light for prolonged periods of time. Warm, soapy water is best for cleaning zircon. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners should not be used for this December birthstone.
Tanzanite: Modern & Extraordinary
Unlike most gemstones that have been beloved for centuries, tanzanite’s history is relatively modern. Discovered in 1967, tanzanite is an exquisite blue-to-purple variety of the mineral zoisite and can only be found in a single region of the world. This gorgeous blue December birthstone was named after its exclusive geographic origin in Tanzania. Tiffany & Co. was actually the first company to market blue zoisite as tanzanite, and the name seems to have stuck.
Tanzanite has become one of the most popular blue gemstones, second only to sapphire. The captivating color of tanzanite ranges from lush blue to vibrant violet to deep, rich purple. Tanzanite is actually a very unusual gemstone. One of the most alluring aspects of tanzanite is its pleochroic quality. This means tanzanite can reveal different colors when viewed from various directions. Between its exotic color and scarce supply, tanzanite is treasured by many and makes an excellent December birthstone gift.
How to care for tanzanite:
While tanzanite can be worn in all kinds of jewelry, proper discretion should still be taken against rough wearing or hard blows. Tanzanite is stable under normal wearing conditions- it’s resistant to the effects of heat, light, and common chemicals. However, it should still not be overly exposed. Warm, soapy water is the best way to clean tanzanite. It is not recommended for ultrasonic or steam cleaners.

12 Fascinating Facts about Sapphire
Publish date
September 18, 2019
Celebrating a birthday this September? Surprise yourself or a loved one with the gift of sparkling sapphires, the breathtaking September birthstone. Sapphire is regarded as one of the five cardinal gemstones, with a history as vibrant as its brilliant blue color. There’s more to this precious stone than meets the eye, which is why we’ve decided to detail some of the most fascinating facts about sapphire to share with you!
1. Sapphire Name Meaning
Sapphire gets its name from two ancient terms, the Greek word sappheiros, and the Latin word sapphirus, both of which mean “blue.” Before the discovery of sapphire, it’s believed these terms were used to describe the semi-precious stone, Lapis Lazuli, which also occurs in a rich blue color.
2. Sapphire Colors
Though blue is certainly the most popular color of sapphire, this glittering gemstone comes in a variety of heavenly hues. Sapphire can occur in marvelous shades of pink, yellow, green, purple, and even white. In fact, white sapphire has become a favorite alternative to the traditional diamond due to its affordability. White sapphire tends to be the least expensive variety of this incredible September birthstone.
3. Sapphire History
Sapphires are considered an ancient treasure, prized for thousands of years among several cultures. During the Middle Ages, sapphire was used to protect a wearer from evil. And in Ancient Roman civilizations, polished sapphires were worn as jewelry. Sapphire has historically been associated with royalty and nobility. In fact, up until the 17th century, sapphires were reserved only for royalty and high priests. Anyone else was strictly forbidden from wearing the precious stone.
4. Sapphire and Ruby
Sapphire is a variety of the mineral corundum, and shares the same chemical composition and mineral structure as ruby. In other words, sapphire and ruby are essentially identical aside from their color. Other trace elements are what determine the gem’s color. Sapphire’s brilliant blue shades are the result of trace amounts of iron and titanium.
5. Padparadscha Sapphire
The rarest variety of sapphire is known as padparadscha, a captivating pinkish orange gem traditionally found in Sri Lanka. The name padparadscha is derived from the Sinhalese word for lotus flower. These elusive sapphires are sifted straight from the Sri Lankan river, and for centuries this was one of the only known sources. However, padparadscha has since been discovered in regions of Madagascar and Tanzania.
6. Sapphire Durability
Second only to diamond, sapphire is considered the most durable gemstone available. Earning a score of 9 on Moh’s Scale of Mineral Hardness, sapphire is relatively resistant to scratching and chipping, making it ideal for jewelry. Sapphire jewelry can safely be worn every day without worry. If you’re looking for a durable alternative to diamond, sapphire is a top contender.
7. Sapphire Uses
Besides sapphire jewelry, this beautiful blue gem is used in other, unexpected ways. Thanks to its durability, sapphire is used to create watch crystals for several Swiss timepieces, as well as Apple watches. It can also be used to create scientific instruments, electronic wafers, and high-durability windows. Who knew a gemstone could be so versatile?
8. Where is Sapphire Found?
Sapphire is found in only a handful of locations around the world. The three most well-known sources of sapphire are Kashmir, Burma, and Sri Lanka. More recently discovered mines exist in regions of Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Madagascar. In fact, despite having just been discovered in the late 1990’s, Madagascar has grown to become one of the world’s leading sources of sparkling sapphires.
9. Sapphire Symbolism
With such a rich history, sapphire has adopted many meanings over the centuries, as one might expect. Cultures from every corner of the globe have attributed various mystical meanings to sapphire. In ancient Persia, rulers believed that the sky’s blue color was reflected from sapphire stones. Greek and Roman royalty wore sapphire as protection from the envious eyes of others who may try to bring them harm. It is even said that the original Ten Commandments were etched into sapphire stone.
10. Sapphire Price
The price of sapphire is evaluated based on a number of different factors, the most important being color. Cornflower blue sapphires from Kashmir are considered most valuable due to their heavily saturated color. Blue sapphire is often mined in large carat sizes, another factor that adds to the gem’s value. The most expensive sapphire ever sold weighed a whopping 392.52 carats, and cost more than $17 million!
11. Famous Sapphires
Several famous sapphires have emerged over the centuries, including the Star of India, the Rockefeller Sapphire, and the Logan Blue Sapphire. But perhaps the most well-known sapphire is that of Princess Diana’s engagement ring. The 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire was seen as an unusual choice for Lady Diana, as it was featured in one of Garrard’s catalogues, making it available to the general public. Typically, a royal engagement ring would be a custom design not accessible to commoners. But, as many remember, Diana was known as the “people’s princess,” and this is just one example of why. Nowadays, this legendary sapphire is worn by Prince William’s wife Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge. He proposed with his mother’s ring in 2010, keeping her legacy alive through this beautiful blue gem.
12. Color Change Sapphire
An elusive variety of sapphire exists that has the unique ability to change color when viewed under different sources of light. Color changing sapphire tends to have a blue hue during daylight that changes to deep violet under incandescent light. This rare form of sapphire is mined from locations around the world, including Cambodia, Tanzania, and even here in the United States. These types of sapphires are valued based on the strength of their color change, either weak, moderate, or strong.

August Birthstone: Peridot
Publish date
August 1, 2019
August’s birthstone, peridot, is sure to make you green with envy. A gem variety of olivine, peridot is composed primarily of two minerals, fayalite and forsterite. The presence of iron, which is rich in fayalite, is what gives peridot its signature green hue. Although peridots are one of the few gemstones that occur in one consistent color, they can be found in shades ranging from light yellowish green to deep olive. Celebrating the August baby in your life? Learn all you need to know about gorgeous green peridots here!
Where is peridot found?
Along with diamonds, peridot is the only gemstone found within the earth’s mantle rather than originating from the earth’s crust. Peridot crystals have even been discovered in particles from pallasite meteorites that are actually remains left over from our solar system’s conception. Olivine traces have also been found in stardust, indicating that this gemstone can form even in the cosmos. Peridot is commonly mined in Egypt, China, Myanmar, the Red Sea, and Mexico. In the 1990’s, peridots experienced a revival when new deposits were unearthed in Pakistan. They are mined within the U.S. as well, specifically Arizona which is home to the San Carlos Reservation—the largest peridot producer in the world. However, its most ancient sources originate from St. John’s Island, also known as Zabargad Island, off the coast of Egypt. This gemstone is particularly revered in Egypt, where it is actually the country’s National Gem, and it was the ancient Egyptians who referred to peridots as “gems of the sun.” In fact, some modern historians believe that Cleopatra’s beloved emeralds, with which she was so often adorned, may have in fact been peridots.
August birthstone meaning
Known to the ancient Hebrews, peridot also has biblical references and was later used by Europeans after the Crusades to embellish churches and cathedrals. Ancient lore said the peridot would bring the wearer good luck, relieve anxiety, and inspire confidence. It was worn as a talisman to ward off evil spirits, night terrors, and other dark magic. It is believed that peridots have the spiritual properties to help heal relationships during times of conflict, as it is thought to clear the mind and open the heart. Peridot is also known for relieving stress by helping one balance their emotions. It has often been referred to as the “evening emerald” because ancient miners would search for peridot in the evening when its color would shine as brightly as emeralds under lamplight.
Along with being the birthstone for August, peridot is also traditionally gifted for a 16th wedding anniversary. It is a magnificent gem, not only for its beauty and spiritual properties, but because it is also incredibly affordable due to its abundance. If you’re looking for an alternative to an emerald, which can be rather pricey, opt for a peridot instead! The deeper green variations of peridot are hardly distinguishable from emerald.

Ruby Birthstone History
Ruby has long been one of the most beloved gems, treasured for centuries among a variety of cultures. In ancient India, ruby was considered “the king of precious stones,” prized for its intense color, rarity, and powerful healing properties. Because the deep red color of ruby resembles that of blood, the gem served as a symbol of youth and vitality in traditional Indian jewelry. In medieval Europe, ruby was believed to bring about wealth, wisdom, and success, and was a popular adornment among the wealthy.
July Birthstone Color
Ruby is a variety of the mineral corundum, which comes in a range of captivating colors. Red corundum is known as ruby, pink-orange corundum is called padparadscha, and any other color of corundum is considered to be sapphire. Ruby derives its vivid crimson color from trace amounts of chromium. The vibrant red hue of a ruby radiates passion, fire, and intensity, cementing its status as the most romantic gemstone. Burmese ruby is the most valuable variety of this July birthstone, thanks to its rich shade of red with a slight blue hue. This color of ruby is sometimes referred to as “pigeon’s blood,” and is exclusive to the Mogok Valley mines of Myanmar.
Ruby Meaning & Properties
According to ancient folklore, rubies harness the power to bring about good fortune, predict the threat of danger, and even help cure certain ailments. Ruby is also believed to aid in tough decision making, especially when it comes to personal and financial dilemmas. Wearing this lovely July birthstone can inspire confidence, strength, and other qualities like leadership. Not to mention, rubies exude romance and mystery with their distinct coloring.
Ruby is ideal to wear as jewelry due to its durability. Just like its sister stone, sapphire, ruby has a Moh’s rating of 9, making it hard enough for daily wear. Unlike other, softer gemstones, ruby is an excellent choice for engagement rings. One can confidently wear a ruby ring without having to constantly fuss about fractures or chips.
Where is Ruby Found?
Ruby is mined from a number of locations around the world, though some of the finest specimens ever discovered originated from Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Other important sources include Northern Vietnam, Afghanistan, Madagascar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and more. The shade of ruby can vary depending on where it was sourced. The Montepuez mines in Mozambique were most recently discovered, and are said to produce gems comparable to highly desirable Burmese rubies.
