Pearl GemstonesLike little gifts from the sea, pearls are remarkably beautiful and truly special. Unlike most other gemstones which are minerals, pearls are organic and are formed by living organisms. Generally, pearls are formed within the soft tissue layer of mollusks such as oysters and mussels. However, natural pearls are extremely rare, incredibly expensive, and fairly small. Therefore, people have discovered ways to culture pearls so that they may be enjoyed by many. In cultured pearls, some tissue of a mother-of-pearl bead is introduced into mollusk shells, which over time will form into actual pearls. Admired for their organic state, pearls are available in various types and colors.
- Akoya pearls- originate from Japan and China. Akoya pearls occur naturally white, and are sometimes treated to appear black or very dark blue. A consistent round shape and metallic-like luster distinguishes Akoya pearls.
- South Sea Pearls- grown primarily in Australia, the Philippines and Indonesia. South Sea pearls range in color from white to gold and are the largest saltwater pearls grown today.
- Tahitian Pearls- Tahitian pearls are the only naturally dark pearls. Although often referred to as black pearls, Tahitian pearls are available in a rainbow of exotic colors.
- Freshwater Pearls- the most affordable pearls sold today. Freshwater pearls are known for their baroque shape, white and pastel colors, and soft luster.
